     Association of Anglican Women

There are two A.A.W. Groups in the parish.  The Evening Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 p.m.  The Afternoon Group meets on the second Thursday of each month, at 2:00 p.m.  The meetings are held in the Parish Lounge.  Further details can be obtained from the president of the Evening Group, Margaret Tegg (476 4505), or the Afternoon Group, Verna Rutherford (476 3975).  Visitors are very welcome at both meetings.

     HELM

HELM, or Hills Environmental Living Ministry, is the group set up by the parishes of St John's Roslyn and St Mary's Mornington to study issues of sustainability and the environment.  For more information please visit our Environment & Sustainability Page.

     House Groups

Several small groups meet in people's homes as part of St John's church life.  They meet for fellowship, Bible study and spiritual support and growth.

Groups currently operate on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in both weekly and fortnightly formats.  Recent resources used include Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Life and Philip Yancey's What's so Amazing about Grace.

If you are interested in joining a house group please contact
Christine Barnsley (489 2424).

     Parish Breakfast

A Parish Breakfast is held between the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services on the third Sunday of each month.  Parishioners from either service are warmly invited to join us for breakfast in the Kataluma (the new lounge) from about 9:00 a.m.  We would appreciate a gold coin donation to help cover costs.

     Parish Choir

The Choir (four parts) sings for the 10:00 a.m. service each Sunday, except on the third Sunday of the month, when it sings traditional Evensong at 7:00 p.m.  Rehearsals are on Thursday evening, 7:30 to 8:30.  New members are always welcome.

Contact: Alan Edwards, Organist and Choirmaster (telephone 477 2865).

     St John's Men's Group

The St John's Men's Group is currently inactive.  However, a men's fellowship group is running at our neighbouring parish of St Mary's Mornington, and men from both parishes are welcome.

     St John's Mini Musicmakers

The Music and Movement Groups, for preschoolers and their parents or caregivers, meet for half an hour of singing, playing instruments and moving to music, followed by morning tea and a chat.  Many mothers new to our area have found this to be a good "networking" time.  There are now four groups, meeting at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.  The groups meet in the Kataluma (the new lounge; see our Ground Plan); excellent toilet and baby facilities are available.
Costs are covered by a weekly gold coin donation per family.

There is currently a waiting list for all sessions.  Please come along on a Thursday or Friday and fill out a form so you can be contacted as soon as a place becomes available.

For further information please contact Edith McLeod (telephone 474 5447).

     Sunday School

At St John's we place great emphasis on our ministry to children, with regular Sunday School classes held during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service.  Lessons are taught by a team of committed and experienced teachers, generally rostered on for two or three times each term.  (They like to be able to worship in church on the other Sundays!)

Children come into church just before 10:00 a.m. with their families or friends; then after the first hymn and a prayer for our learning in Sunday School all children go to the lounge for a shared time with singing and prayer.  Following that, the lessons for each particular age-group take place, using the resource Living Stones, chosen by teachers as it follows the lectionary used at St John's.  At present our groupings are:
  • Pre-school to Year 1 (Pebbles)
  • Years 2 to 5 (Rocks)
  • Years 6 to 8 (Boulders)
At about 10:50 a.m. the children are brought back into church to sit with their families so all can celebrate being together with the wider family of St John's at the Eucharist.  Parents of new children are welcome to accompany them to Sunday School and to withdraw whenever they feel is the right time.  Be assured that our teachers are quite relaxed about this.

Please note that on the third Sunday of each month Sunday School is replaced by an All Age Eucharist where the worship includes participation by the children in the content and running of the service.

The co-ordinators of Sunday School activities are Roberta Lawrence (telephone 453 4603) and Nicola Wong (telephone 455 2885).
